1. The purpose of this project
SimpleWill.in is a completely free public-access project created to encourage more people in India to make a will by providing a straightforward starting point without charging them any fee. There is no charge for using the template or generating a Will PDF.
Its free availability does not change the limits of the resource: SimpleWill.in remains a self-service template, not a law firm, and does not provide paid drafting, document review or individual legal advice. If anyone requests payment while claiming to represent SimpleWill.in, please report it to contact@simplewill.in.
2. SimpleWill.in is not a law firm
SimpleWill.in is not a law firm, advocate or legal-services provider. Nothing on this website creates an advocate-client relationship or any other professional relationship between you and SimpleWill.in, One Interactive or anyone involved in operating the website.
The information, questions, explanations and template are general information. They are not legal advice for your individual circumstances.
3. This is a deliberately limited template
The template is designed only for an adult in India who has never married, is at least 18 years old, has no biological or adopted children, has no financial or legal dependants, is not making a will governed by Muslim personal law, and has a straightforward estate consisting of assets that the person is legally entitled to leave by will.
Passing the suitability questions does not guarantee that the template is legally suitable for you. The questions cannot identify every relevant family, ownership, succession or personal-law issue.
4. When you should not use this template
Do not rely on this template if you:
- Are currently married or have previously been married—including if you are separated, divorced or widowed, or if a marriage was annulled.
- Have children or financial dependants.
- Are governed by Muslim personal law.
- Own foreign assets, HUF assets, trust property, disputed assets or complex business interests.
- Have difficulty identifying which assets legally belong to you or can be left by will.
- Want to make conditional gifts or provide for a minor or vulnerable beneficiary.
- Intend to exclude someone who may expect to inherit.
- Anticipate a family dispute.
- Are uncertain whether this simple template reflects your circumstances.
In any of these situations, consult a qualified advocate who can consider your individual circumstances.
5. You are responsible for your decisions
You are responsible for providing accurate information, confirming that all names, addresses, relationships and percentages are correct, deciding who should act as executor and receive your estate, confirming that you own the assets you intend to leave, and reading the entire document before signing it.
SimpleWill.in does not review the information you enter and does not decide whether your choices are sensible, fair, tax-efficient or legally effective.
6. Consider professional review
You may have the completed document reviewed by a qualified advocate before signing it. Professional review is strongly recommended if you are uncertain about any part of the document or if your circumstances are not completely straightforward.
7. Downloading does not complete your will
Generating, downloading, saving or printing a PDF does not by itself create a completed will. The document must be reviewed, printed, signed and witnessed in accordance with the law applicable to you.
You are responsible for selecting suitable witnesses, completing the signing process correctly and preserving the signed original. Use two independent adults as witnesses. A beneficiary—or the spouse of a beneficiary—should not be used as a witness.
8. Marriage and other major changes
This template is intended only for adults who have never married. It is not designed for anyone who is currently married, separated, divorced or widowed, or whose marriage was annulled. If you marry after making a will with this template, do not continue relying on it. Review your will whenever there is a significant change in your family, relationships, assets, executor, beneficiaries or personal circumstances.
If necessary, make a fresh will and complete the signing and witnessing process again. Do not make informal handwritten alterations to an already signed document.
9. No guarantee of validity or outcome
We aim to provide a clear and useful starting point, but we do not guarantee that the template is suitable for your circumstances, that the completed document will be legally valid or enforceable, that every asset will pass under the will, that an institution will accept it, or that it will prevent a dispute.
The legal effect of a will depends on the facts, the applicable law and the manner in which the document is completed and signed.
10. Registration and nominations
Registration of a will is generally optional, but registration does not correct unclear wording, incorrect information, unsuitable witnesses or an improper signing process.
A nomination made with a bank, insurer, investment provider or other institution may not always determine who ultimately inherits an asset. You are responsible for checking your nominations, ownership arrangements and institutional records alongside your will.
11. Privacy and information entered into the form
The will form is designed to process the personal information you enter inside your browser. SimpleWill.in does not intentionally collect or store the names, addresses, beneficiary details or estate instructions entered into the form.
Ordinary website-hosting systems may process limited technical information, such as an IP address, browser type, device information and security or access logs. Do not complete the form on a public or shared device. You are responsible for securely storing and protecting any document you download.
12. Availability and technical limitations
We do not guarantee that the website will always be available, error-free or compatible with every browser, device, printer or PDF application. Review the downloaded document carefully. If information is missing, incorrectly displayed, cut off or unreadable, do not sign it.
13. Limitation of responsibility
To the extent permitted by applicable law, SimpleWill.in, One Interactive and the website’s operators will not be responsible for loss, delay, expense, disagreement or legal proceedings resulting from reliance on the website, use of an unsuitable template, incorrect or incomplete user information, improper signing or witnessing, loss of the signed original, changes in circumstances or law, or the acts of an executor, beneficiary, witness, institution or third party.
You use the template at your own discretion and remain responsible for deciding whether it is appropriate for you. Nothing in these terms excludes any responsibility that cannot legally be excluded or prevents anyone from exercising rights available under applicable law.
14. Changes to the website or these terms
We may update the website, template, suitability questions or these terms when necessary. The date at the top of this page indicates when these terms were last revised. Use the latest available version and review the completed document again before signing it.
15. Governing law and jurisdiction
These terms are governed by the laws of India. Subject to applicable law, courts located in Mumbai, Maharashtra will have jurisdiction over disputes relating to the use of SimpleWill.in.
16. Website operator
